Refurbishments of these ships have seen the addition of lots of exciting features such as The Perfect Storm Waterslides, escape rooms and laser tag. However, the largest cruise ships are just too big to dock at some ports. So, if you want to go island hopping around Greece, for example, you’ll need a smaller ship. Many people (myself included) love the Oasis-class ships because they have so much to do on board. There’s even a park in the middle with over 10,000 real plants and trees!
Serenade of the Seas
Those who favor vast viewing areas, traditional cruise activities, and less crowded spaces will appreciate what Radiance-class ships have to offer. Oasis class ships are the biggest in the world and they get bigger and better every time! Some of them are so large that they have a zip line and a merry go round. In fact I remember the hype around Independence of the Seas when it launched. I wasn’t into cruising back then but I even went down to Southampton docks to see the fireworks. It brought me back to a more classic cruise experience without the need for water slides, zip lines, and carousels.

Freedom of the Seas and Independence of the Seas have been through Royal's amplification renovations, bringing their lists of attractions closer to that of newer and larger ships. While many areas on these ships are brand new, they can still feel a little dated, particularly in the staterooms and some of the bars. There are 8 neighborhoods dividing up the ship, including returning favourites like Central Park and Royal Promenade, along with 5 new ones.

There’s not a lot publicly known about Royal Caribbean’s future new builds under the Icon Class. Currently, there are three ships in this class on order with the first scheduled for 2023 and vessels 2 and 3 following in 2025 and 2026. These ships will be an all-new design, likely featuring some incredible new experiences plus incorporate many of Royal Caribbean’s most popular ones. The 200,000-gross ton, 5,000 guest vessels will be larger than Quantum Class, but smaller than Oasis class and utilize new propulsion technology with an eco-friendly LNG drive system significantly reducing emissions. In terms of interior spaces, Freedom-class vessels have the mall-like Royal Promenade spaces that have become standard on bigger Royal Caribbean ships. Beyond the casino, spa, and swimming pools that are standard on most luxury cruises, these ships provide unique activities such as mini-golf, basketball, and ice skating. A blend of classic charm and modern innovation, Royal Caribbean’s Freedom-class ships offer a rich cruising experience. I would sail on the Radiance Class time and time again just for the amazing itinerary options. Radiance Class ships, like Quantum Class ships, sail all over the world. Some of Royal Caribbean's most unique ports, such as Nuuk, Greenland and Lifou, Loyalty Islands, are visited by Radiance Class cruise ships.
With their intimate design, these vessels provide the perfect backdrop for explorers who relish a deeper connection with the sea and destinations often less frequented by larger vessels. Waterslides are a notable feature on all ships except Explorer of the Seas. Notably, Navigator of the Seas boasts The Blaster, the longest waterslide at sea. The Playmakers sports bar, a karaoke lounge, and a dedicated tea room are added attractions, though these ships do forgo the traditional pub and teen disco. While they inherit the pioneering spirit of the Quantum Class, they offer enhanced features and amenities, making them an evolution in maritime luxury.
My 3-night cruise on Freedom of the Seas was, by far, the most high-energy cruise I’ve experienced on Royal Caribbean. Freedom Class ships offer something for everyone onboard without being too big, and that’s one of the things I like most about them. They also tend to offer a great value while still offering many of Royal Caribbean’s newest amenities. The biggest drawback of the Oasis Class ships to me are the lack of areas with ocean views.
